June was a fairly busy month for the showmen with numerous 2&3 day fairs happening to support local gala days. Kicking off in the Lothian area, Morrisons presented their annual fair in a very sunny East Calder with 5 large machines which was slightly down on last year. Also on at the same time was Taylors fair at Leith Links where 10 large rides were in attendance including English Showman Michael O'Briens Big Wheel and nicely decorated Superbob. Harry Millers "Twister" Coaster was also present offering the customers something different to try. Moving along the M8 motorway, George Henry Codona opened in Harthill with 4 machines and plenty of juveniles for support. Trade appeared to be busy with Waltzers & Dodgems getting most of the attention.
Moving to the middle of the month now and Nathaniel Codona presented a 3 day fair at Armadale with 10 large machines and plenty of supporting attractions. Anthony Strands "Rage Cage" Round Up making its first visit as too was M&D Taylors "Eclipse" Contact both attracting their fair share of the trade. Also around the same time fairs were on at Forth, Broxburn and Selkirk where Hiscoes opened with their usual array of machines.
The children of Grangemouth were celebrating the 100th Gala Day with a bigger than normal fair at Grangemouth. Taylors made some changes in the line up with the addition of a Ghost Train and a Superbob and there was a welcome return for Taylors Jumper and O'Briens Big Wheel, which have both missed the last couple of years. Taylors also had their "Pony Express" Juvenile on offer as well as many Funhouses, Arcades and Juveniles. The Edinburgh based showmen also presented engraved medals to the participants of the gala which im sure would have been very well accepted.
Towards the end of June George Henry Codona visits Whitburn with a nice selection of rides. This year included Sedgwicks Superspin and Freak Out and Damien Batemans Move It was on a first time visit. Visiting the fair for the first time was William Hancocks Orbiter which was situated at the top end of the fair. Also at the end of June, Bo'Ness and Galashiels fairs started and ran into the start of July.
The "Summer Fairground" at Burntisland has seen the number of main rides increase almost double. All the additonal rides have appeared at the fair before with the exception of Harry Knowles Ribtickler which hasn't appeared here for quite a few years if at all! Spencer Hiscoes "Tempest" Skydiver is also present but will be leaving soon to attend the summer fair at Braehead Shopping Centre. More rides are due to attend when fairs the likes of Galashiels and Jedburgh finish.
There was really only one new ride that everyone was talking about in June and that was M&D Taylors new Booster, which has been called "Bomber Mark 2". the ride made its debut at Newcastle Town Moor after beeing picked up a couple of days before the pull on. The ride is about 10m taller than the previous model and each gondola holds 8 instead of 4. After Newcastle the ride will be making its Scottish Debut at T in the Park music festival.
