AUGUST 2007

The Bridge of Allan Highland Games started the month of August with a large funfair and this year the ground was fuller than normal due to St.Andrews fair not clashing. 3 rides made their debut at the fair, Wheatleys "Speed Buzz", Hiscoes family Drop Tower and Graham Johnsons rare Skid. As usual with fairs this year, the opening few nights saw good weather but when Games Day arrived the weather couldnt be worse. The Games went ahead but the fair suffered due to heavy rain which is a shame as this fair has something for all the family and is one of the better presented in the season. Also on at the same time, although for a shorter period, Inverkeithing Highland Games had better luck with their weather, the sun shone all day and the fair looked well supported from locals. The machine number is decreasing each year with only 3 large rides in attendance, Batemans Rock'O'Plane being the only regular. Justin Codonas "Starchaser" Waltzers made a welcome return a couple of years and Douglas Codona brought along his "Yankee Flyer" Miami for a first visit.

After Inverkeithing its the turn of South Queensferry for its "Ferry Festival" and as usual a funfair on the car park situated just under the Forth Rail Bridge. A few changes to the line up this year, the main one being Gavin Stirlings Waltzer in place of Justin Codonas which was at St.Andrews. Douglas Codonas Miami and John Whites Tagada were also on first time visits and proving popular. Also starting around this time are 2 of the larger fairs of the month, St.Andrews Lammas and Edinburgh Meadows. St.Andrew Lammas fair is spread over 2 streets, Market Street which opens Friday to Tuesday and South Street which opens Monday & Tuesday. The smaller of the 2 fairs on Market Street had a small change in the line up with Irvin Stringfellows Drop Tower taking the place of Joe Whites Ghost Train which is still in Ireland. There were more changes in South Street the main noticable one was the absence of M&D's Bomber which was in their Theme Park. New rides on South Street included John Wheatleys Speed Buzz, Gilbert Chadwicks new Ghost Train, Hornes "Monte Carlo" Car Track, Stanley Gambles Tagada and Spencer Hiscoes Drop Tower. Graham Sedgwicks "Superspin" returned after a few years away and John Wheatleys Miami was present after last attending in 2002. Monday night was hot and sunny and good crowds were in the 2 streets, but Tuesday night saw numbers drop due to heavy rain (again). Over in Edinburgh, John Evans presented a large funfair in connection with the Fringe Festival. The fair is held just a stones throw away from the site of Taylors fair held in June. The fair is situated right next to a collection of Circus Tents and is in an ideal place to attract the familes coming to and from the different events. The fair was laid out in the usual way with a square of large attractions and a small centre run of juveniles and hooplas. 2 Dodgems were again present with only a juvenile ride separating them, and new to the fair this year were Chance Hanleys Skydiver, although the ride has opened at the fair before when owned by Jensen Codona, Edwin Pinders "Carnival Magic" Funhouse and Craig McKays Ghost Train.

Up north the Nairn Highland Games were again a wash out with heavy rain falling from Friday night and lasted just about the whole Games day on Saturday. Usual rides were present such as Henry Evans Experience, John Wheatleys Miami, Bennett Hiscoes Dodgems and Hornes Dodgems, again another fair with 2 Dodgems Tracks. New to the fair this year was Mark Herchers "Ravecage" Round Up, the fair hasnt seen such a ride in a few years now, and John Wheatleys "Speed Buzz" Fun Factory.

Burntisland also came to a close on the 19th to the delight of some showmen who have endured one of the wettest summers for a long while. Most of the equipment would head to Irvine for the annual "Marymass" fair and a few others headed to Dunkeld for their Highland Games. The line up at Dunkeld this year was the same as last year minus Harry Knowles Ribtickler. Although the Showmen had to pull on in soft ground conditions, the weather soon picked up and the Games Day itself couldnt have been better with Sunshine, and a bit of heat, for most of the day. From Dunkeld, the rides split with some going to Stenhousemuir and some going to Blairgowrie.
